The Boone County Ambulance Authority provides 4 levels of emergency and non-emergency care. Take a look below to discover the services offered by our agency.

Levels of Care Provided

Basic Life Support (BLS)

The BCAA offers BLS staffed ambulances out of Station 10 in Danville and Station 50 in Jeffrey. These units are typically dedicated to our Transport Division providing scheduled medical transport for continuing care of our patients but are fully capable of responding to 911 responses. These units are staffed with two Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) who have, at a minimum, received 150 hours of training developed and certified by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians.

Advanced Life Support (ALS)

Our ambulances that are dedicated to ALS care are our 911 response units. At present, we staff 5 ALS units across Boone County. 3 units are stationed at Station 20 in Danville, 1 unit at Station 40 in Racine, and 1 unit at Station 60 in Van. These units are staffed with one Paramedic and one EMT (as described above). The paramedic onboard has received nearly two years of emergency medical training in a college atmosphere with intense hands on training including clinical rotations in emergency rooms, operating rooms, intensive care units, pediatric units, obstetrics units, and much more. These units are ready at a moments' notice to respond to any emergency response.

Class 3 Interfacility Transport

C3IFT is an added level of training for paramedics to teach them how to manage more advanced medications that are sometimes required during transport from one hospital setting to another hospital. All BCAA Paramedics are required after being hired to receive this additional training. Currently, the BCAA operates one C3IFT unit that primarily responds to the transport needs of Boone Memorial Hospital in Madison.

Critical Care Transport

CCT certification can only be obtained by Paramedics with a minimum of three years of emergency response experience. This intense training program was developed by the West Virginia Office of EMS to provide a higher level of care to the most critical patients in our state. This additional training allows us to provide a more advanced level of treatment than can be provided on a normal ambulance. The BCAA currently operates one Critical Care Transport unit at Station 20 in Danville. This unit responds to CCT requests for patient transport from one hospital to another and is also available to provide critical care intercept to 911 calls if a patient requires more advanced care.
